Anisa Ashkar

APRIL 2004
Frog Woman
Walking by the Akre Naval Camp as a child, Ashkar was attracted to the white navy uniforms – precisely to that which was prohibited for her, as a citizen, as an Arab, and certainly as a female. In her performance, Ashkar inscribes the lyrics of the well-known naval commando song “Frogmen” on her body. She also engages in the absurd act of trying to resuscitate a dead fish floating in milk. The color white features prominently in Ashkar’s works, particularly via the clear symbolism of milk. Here, the color white is also used in a surprising military context, the nationalist-military motif serving to create novel individual contexts of meaning.
